After nine months in office, President Obama is slipping in his approval rating in California, according to the most recent Field Poll.

The poll surveyed 1,005 registered voters in California between Sept. 18 and Oct. 5. Overall, 60 percent said they approve of his job performance while 31 percent disapprove.

Six months ago, the same poll showed his approval rating at 65 percent, with 21 percent disapproving.

Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo told the San Francisco Chronicle that Obama’s ratings are “still very solid,” but attributes much of the voters’ approval to the fact that 60 percent applauded the way Obama is managing the economy.

Much of the decline comes from within President Obama’s own party. Among Democrats, the rating has slipped from 87 percent approval in March to 81 percent this past week.

Nationwide, Obama’s approval rate is increasing, according to the most recent Associated Press-GfK poll. While the approval rating rested at 50 percent last month, 56 percent of voters surveyed this week said they approve the president’s job performance.

DiCamillo said the lower numbers in California can be credited to him “using a lot of his political capital on passing health care reform. Some of his predecessors who had higher numbers didn't use a lot of their capital right away."

Field Poll ratings based on certain aspects of Obama’s job performance include:

-Health Care Reform: According to the poll, 52 percent are in favor of the most recent reform package, while 37 percent oppose and 11 percent said they had no opinion.

-The U.S. Economy: Approval ratings continue to be solid, with 60 percent approving the way Obama has handled the economy, down just one percentage point from the March Field Poll.

-Foreign Policy: Down five percentage points, the rating for foreign policy has dropped to 58 percent approving, 29 percent disapproving, and 13 percent giving no opinion.

-Afghanistan: Among Californians, 48 percent say they approve Obama’s actions in Afghanistan, while 31 percent disapprove and 21 percent gave no opinion. When asked if troop levels should increase in Afghanistan, 33 percent said yes, while 16 percent believed the troop numbers remain the same, 37 percent said troop numbers should decrease, and 14 percent offered no opinion.
